PPO - Preferred Provider Organizations
PPO health insurance plans are a hybrid between traditional health care
plans (which allow you to visit any doctor or hospital and have deductibles)
and HMO's which have co-pays.
Unlike a HMO plan, a PPO program allows you to choose any doctor or
specialist within the PPO network without a referral from a
primary care physician. You don't have to name a primary care physician.
- PPO's generally provide a card for Doctor visits, which will cover
medically necessary, X-rays, and lab tests with a co-pay which can range
from $ 10 to $ 25 per visit.
- Most PPO's have a deductible which will apply in the event of
hospitalization or surgery. You may select a deductible of $ 250, $
500, $ 750, $1000, or higher. The higher the deductible you choose, the lower will
be your monthly premium.
- All PPO plans limit your maximum annual out-of-pocket expenditure, which
protects you from financial disaster.
- Some PPO plans also include a prescription card with co-pays or programs
that pay for 90% to 50% of the prescription costs.
PPO's offer quality health care while keeping the monthly premium
affordable. Premiums will depend upon individual health, age, smoking
habits, residential zip code, and other factors.
